Day 5: Dart Stables & Shotover Jet
Our fifth day in New Zealand saw us horse riding!

Signing up with Dart Stables, we visited more scenes of the Lord of the Rings, such as Isengard, Amon Hen, Lothlorien Forest, Wizard’s Vale and Methedras. And as part of any horse riding experience, it was always a battle between the rider and the horse, in a constant prevent-the-horses-from-eating-too-much as the norm.

01 Dart StablesThe most memorable of all though was that we rode to 2000 feet above sea level, ending up with a wondrous view of the Dart River! Plus the fact that the guide joked that while Paradise Ducks mate for life (they really do), should the male duck pass away, the female goes on to find another mate. But if the female duck dies first, the male will cry himself to death. The story sticks to me till now.

02 Dart River

Oh, and if you are lucky, you might just get a horse which starred in a movie. Mine was a cast in The Chronicles of Narnia, my sister’s was a Rohirrim in LOTR. So essentially, we were riding with the stars…

The afternoon saw me and the Boy getting our adrenaline up and pumping again, with Shotover Jet. Picking up from the information centre, we got a free transfer to the Shotover Canyon, where we put on our life jackets, and enjoyed the ride of a lifetime. While we enjoyed the activity greatly, what intrigued us even more was that the jetboat was speeding at a height of about 10cm of water just above the riverbed, yet it is still in extremely good shape.

03 Shotover JetIn fact, the Boy was so happy with the adventure, he could not stop smiling!
